After moving back from New Plymouth to Auckland in 2008, I undertook some consulting work for The Management Toolbox, mainly looking at management information and procurement systems for Tasman Orient and then Air NZ. However, tougher economic times were rapidly descending, and with the pressure this usually applies on Consulting, I thought it wiser to seek full time employment.

FITEC, were advertising for a newly created position of COO, and I found myself back in the forestry sector, albeit focussing on the training side of the industry. It didn’t take me long to see that the job was essentially a turn around position (the organisation was spending more than it was earning) and we set about reducing costs and trying to develop new lines of revenue. After three years the organisation returned to profitability, but bigger structural changes in the ITO sector driven by the Government caught up with it, and a timid board missed the opportunity to consolidate through acquisition.

Venture Taranaki Trustee

One of the most enjoyable roles I have undertaken was when I was selected from a nationwide search to be a Trustee of a newly formed Venture Taranaki – Taranaki’s economic development agency – and fair to say, one of (if not the) leading agency in the country. The Board was chaired by the wonderful John Young, a hugely impressive man both in terms of vision and capability.

The Beginning

After graduating from Massey University in 1984 with a BAgSc (Hons) degree, I went home for the summer to unwind and complete my practical work.

I was fortunate to be introduced to John Gazzard, Taranaki’s leading farm consultant, who offered me to join his practice.

Attached is a small advert that appeared in the Daily News in March 1985, that launched the start of my career.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog.

When one turns 50, I think it is allowable to have a small peak over one’s shoulder to think about what has been achieved.

I have been blessed to have done some amazing jobs, and both work with and meet some amazing people along the way.

This is a modest attempt at capturing some interesting moments in my career, through various press clippings, photos and memorabilia that I have collected over the years.

I hope it may put a smile on the face of some of my former colleagues and employees.
